I agree with the others that this is clearly NOT due to manually running grub-install, since everything was working fine until the upgrade to 14.04 itself ran grub !!!!!
As the Head of Quality Management for an IT shop in a large international company, calling this invalid is ridiculous! This is a bug guys, now fix it.
