Ok, so the problem is not with alsa-driver - when I change the volume
level with alsamixer, the actual volume changes as expected. Rather, it
is Unity's sound level applet.

In alsamixer, there are three main items: Master, Headphone and PCM.
When I drag the slider of the graphical applet from 0 to approximately
60%, it first changes the "Headphone" level; after that the actual
"Master" level is changed.

That doesn't make any sense! I don't want the "Headphone" level to be
changed at all.
