I'm not sure about the proprietary NVIDIA driver, but VDPAU on the 8800 GTS can work in the open-souce nouveau driver thanks to the 8800 GTS's VP1 decoding and acceleration block. It's just not implemented yet. You can monitor it's progress at http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/VideoAcceleration/
