I have same problem. On 12.04 it was even acceptable - freezing from time to time. But after upgrading to 13.04 I have 3 to 4 freezes before successfull lightdm load. Patching /etc/init/lightdm.conf helped me for now - but slowing down fastboot is a little pity.
