struggled with this for ages (same thing's happening with xubuntu 13.04) installing from usb. got it working in the end by mounting all partitions except for the partition that would become / sudo swapoff -a saying 'no' when the installer asked if it wanted me to let it unmount the partitions. thanks for all our pointers everyone. this needs to get fixed though.
