These problems are very specific to ubuntu, as a similar setup (linux kernel, gdm, gnome etc) forund on Fedora Core work perfectly on the new iMac. I suggest someone install Fedora Core and use it for deubugging to catch the symbols coming from gdm during the freeze point on ubuntu.
