I am not generally opposed to updating rc17 to the final release, but someone should extract the patch and review all changes for sanity. If there are only bug fixes which are obvious, I'm fine with it. If there are patches that change behaviour, configuration variables, or introduce new features, then the bug fixes should be backported instead. It's not particularly hard for dovecot, since upstream uses version control with proper changesets.
