This means something has crashed (probably not apport itself, that's the
program that reports crashes): to find out what, look in /var/crash.

I have the same problem, but it started on upgrading from 12.04 Unity 2D
to 12.10 full Unity; I attach my crash report.  (I know this is probably
the wrong way to send one but I am not entering my password at an
unidentifiable prompt: see bug 794757).
