Then I go back to my first comment: I am seeing this bug on 12.10. Not as often as in 12.04, the icon is not invisible, but I have again the issue of an active Writer instance in the launcher that is not the regular icon, hence I see two Writer icons, the one I have "kept" in the launch bar, and a new one that represents the active instance. It is far less frequent than in 12.04, but it is there. If I manage to find a way to reproduce it, I will put it here.
