What method are you using to install the Java jdk? I don't use the jdk but I did not have any issues with Java RE 1.6 until a security issue was discovered with that version, then subsequent upgraded versions of Firefox automatically disabled jre1.6. But once I've installed jre1.7 from java.com, applets are working within Firefox.
