Thanks for testing. Can you run apport-collect 900278 while the new driver package is installed? That will attach a new set of logs and sytem info files to this bug report.
I'm still learning this audio debugging stuff from someone else so it will be a few days until I have time to find the answer to your configuration question and to familiarise myself with a couple of the tools which will help us narrow down the problem. In the meantime, it is possible that with the upgraded drivers you are now seeing the "power-map for speaker-pins with some HP laptops with bad BIOS and sound codec IDT92HD81B1X5 causes silence" bug which was fixed in the upstream 3.4 kernel. From the changelog: author Takashi Iwai Tue, 15 May 2012 06:07:31 +0000 (08:07 +0200) committer Takashi Iwai Tue, 15 May 2012 06:14:36 +0000 (08:14 +0200) commit b0791dda813c179e539b0fc1ecd3f5f30f2571e2 tree 5367c2614c4620301584a5d4eb6becc64494b618 parent 9ea3356d7979909d19252f7e552fb879643eaa70 ALSA: hda/idt - Fix power-map for speaker-pins with some HP laptops BIOS on some HP laptops don't set the speaker-pins as fixed but expose as jacks, and this confuses the driver as if these pins are jack-detectable. As a result, the machine doesn't get sounds from speakers because the driver prepares the power-map update via jack unsol events which never come up in reality. The bug was introduced in some time in 3.2 for enabling the power-mapping feature. This patch fixes the problem by replacing the check of the persistent power-map bits with a proper is_jack_detectable() call. Bugzilla: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=43240 Cc: <sta...@vger.kernel.org> [v3.2+] Signed-off-by: Takashi Iwai This patch has also been included in the upstream 3.2.18 kernel, so will be making it's way to Precise as an SRU at some point. In the meantime a PPA of he 3.2.18 kernel can be found at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds for info on how to install and uninstall this PPA. ** Bug watch added: Linux Kernel Bug Tracker #43240 http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=43240 ** Tags added: precise -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/900278 Title: [HP ENVY 14 Notebook PC, IDT 92HD81B1X5, Speaker, Internal] Playback problem To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/900278/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
