Thanks for testing. Can you run apport-collect 900278 while the new
driver package is installed? That will attach a new set of logs and
sytem info files to this bug report.

I'm still learning this audio debugging stuff from someone else so it
will be a few days until I have time to find the answer to your
configuration question and to familiarise myself with a couple of the
tools which will help us narrow down the problem.

In the meantime, it is possible that with the upgraded drivers you are
now seeing the "power-map for speaker-pins with some HP laptops with bad
BIOS and sound codec IDT92HD81B1X5 causes silence" bug which was fixed
in the upstream 3.4 kernel. From the changelog:

ALSA: hda/idt - Fix power-map for speaker-pins with some HP laptops

BIOS on some HP laptops don't set the speaker-pins as fixed but expose
as jacks, and this confuses the driver as if these pins are
jack-detectable. As a result, the machine doesn't get sounds from
speakers because the driver prepares the power-map update via jack
unsol events which never come up in reality. The bug was introduced
in some time in 3.2 for enabling the power-mapping feature.

This patch fixes the problem by replacing the check of the persistent
power-map bits with a proper is_jack_detectable() call.

This patch has also been included in the upstream 3.2.18 kernel, so will be
making it's way to Precise as an SRU at some point. In the meantime a PPA of
he 3.2.18 kernel can be found at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/
See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds for info on how to install
and uninstall this PPA.
