My machine also freezes completely, no mouse or keyboard response, but only in unity. it freezes mostly in firefox (klick on tab or link), but also in ubuntu software-center or chromium-browser (rare).
important: unity-2d works fine! I can browse the web in unity-2d without any freezes.
