I run Ubuntu 11.10 on a dual boot system using wubi I am not sure if my situation is the same, but when my system crashed (no login screen) after installing the recommended nvidia drivers I could boot with a previously installed kernel (#15). But every update of the kernel after #15 gives me a blank screen.
