Those messages are harmless. I believe a scancode is being produced for
the Fn key, but there's no need to be handling it.

The same changes for Toshiba hotkey handling were introduced upsteram in
kernel version 3.4-rc1, so that's an indication that these changes are
likely to blame. Checking 3.2.0-21 or earlier of the kernel for precise
should confirm it.

If you find that using the older precise kernel helps, please do the
following while booted with that kernel. Install the input-utils package
and run 'sudo lsinput'. You need to find two devices in the output, one
named "Toshiba input device" and another named "AT Translated Set 2
keyboard". Note the device numbers for both of these (lsinput will show
/dev/input/event<n>; <n> is the device number).

Starting with the Toshiba device, run "sudo input-events <n>", then
press the function key for the brightness. If you don't see any output,
do the same for the AT keyboard device. Let me know which device shows
events in response to the brightness keys. You can exit input-events
with Ctrl+C, or it will time out after a few seconds of inactivity.
