I managed to rebuild aptitude 0.6.6-1 (from debian unstable). This also required rebuilding libgtest-dev and google-mock from debian unstable. Once installed, I can confirm that this is definitely an improvement: i386 packages are labelled as package:i386. aptitude still wants to remove all the :i386 packages whenever there is any sort of conflict.
