100% ACK Bugs like this show us that Ubuntu is not ready for the desktop.
I have a several years old Canon Lide 30 works fine since Debian Sarge. You can't just break basic functionality and then ignore the bug for weeks/months. There are pages out there like sane that list the scanner as perfect working. Imagine someone buys this scanner and can't use it.
