There should be a file somewhere on your system called rt73sta.dat (in a source install this is located in the /etc/Wireless/RT73STA). In that file you need to put the SSID and the encryption keys. If I don't do this step, I can not have a connection (independent of the settings I do with iwconfig). Once the file is properly configured, I'm able to link up with my access point. IMHO, this is quite annoying, since I'm not able to use the Network Manager to do the settings).
