I have the same problem. It happen very frequently (10 - 15 minutes) but I'm not able to reproduce manually the respawn. Most time happen when I use the upper-left activity corner feature of gnome. I have Ubuntu 11.10 with gnome-shell but happen the same thing also with cinnamon. this is the dmesg log of gnome when respawn.
