Thanks for describing the issue further, I'll file this against the
kernel as that is the appropriate package for issues booting into the
LiveCD. Please do try to boot into the 10.04 CD and post back regarding
the outcome of that. The kernel team should give you more instructions
as well now that this is packaged. One thing though, I'm fairly sure
this isn't the problem since this occurs with a wubi install as well,
but did you verify the integrity of the cd image before you made your
LiveCD's? If you're unfamiliar with getting an MD5 sum, instructions can
be found here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

** Package changed: ubuntu => linux (Ubuntu)

** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)
       Status: Incomplete => New

** Description changed:

I created a DVD for Ubuntu 11.1 using InfraRecorder (twice!) During
reboot, I get a brief flash screen and then the screen goes black and
the system hangs up. No mouse pointer, no image and not even the DVD
  will eject.

+ The system hangs up while booting from a CD, DVD or from a USB stick. I
+ never get any kind of splash screen, except for a brief view of a
+ maroonish background with two icons at the bottom. It isn't there long
+ enough for me to see what they are. After that, a black screen (not even
+ a mouse pointer) and nothing. I've waited as long as 20 minutes with the
+ black screen, and there is no further activity there, and no further
+ blinking drive lights.
+
I then installed 11.1 to run inside Windows from the Wubi. exe screen.
On reboot, the same thing happens.

This is an older machine running WXP(SP3)
