I have an Asus K50IJ also, and by changing it everytime manually to 'headphone speakers' in ubuntu 11.04 it was fixed. But now in 11.10 oneeric there is no difference when I do that. I'm sorry to see that the problem has come back :( Please keep me updated about this, as I will also do myself.
