BTW, I don't think glxgears is a good 3d benchmark - it was only ever
intended as a quick check that GLX was available. I believe glxspheres
is a much better benchmark, which is why it's included in virtualgl.

If we're just talking about glxspheres, I get almost 60fps in Unity-3D
normally in Oneiric (ie when I'm not experiencing the unexpected
slowdown), unless I turn on "Force full screen redraws (buffer swap) on
repaint", in which case I get frame rates similar to yours.
