It sounds like You automatic sense of audio card type did not went ok. This problem is also by my pc since ubuntu used kernel I think it from 2.6.30 and higher linu kernel versions. (it's kernel not ubuntu related)
adding correct sound card into /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf does solve this problem.
