It sounds like You automatic sense of audio card type did not went ok.
This problem is also by my pc since ubuntu used kernel I think it from
2.6.30 and higher linu kernel versions. (it's kernel not ubuntu related)

adding correct sound card into /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf does solve
this problem.

I had to add :   options snd-hda-intel model=asus-p5q

First look up your correct card into alsa data base (or google around
concerning sound ubuntu with your laptop)

Insert correct model number for your lap model=xxxxx

And restart your pc
