Ok, on the Routing tab there is no Protocol dialog as far as I know, but
there is a "Only use VPN for these addresses" that I checked and added
the 192.168.1.0/24 entry. Then I connected and still operation not
permitted, I can't terminal serve to the VPN server, nor ping or
anything else.

route before connection:
(situation has changed somewhat since adding vmware but that should not affect 
vpn behaviour)

It just doesn't seem to repsond properly or add iptable permissions or
whatever... since I am a user not a programmer I don't think I am
expected to know how to work with iptables.
