problem persists with a different router running dd-wrt, (verified with compat-wireless-tarball '2011-10-10' and '2011-09-19')
cranking up the TX-Power of the router and thus improving the signal had a positive effect, i.e. freezes almost disappeared, so it seems as if it could be related to the weak signal, at least in my (obscure) case.
