I also received the "Could not connect to wpa_supplicant - re-trying"
message.  At this point when I entered ap_scan 0, hit enter, then
ctrl+c, my network stopped dropping.  (Still, I may have performed a
disservice by not testing a solution for several days before posting)

I took it for granted that the Intel card was using an Atheros chipset,
I should have thought about this harder.  Sorry to suggest this was only
atheros/madwifi specific.

I've since removed network-manager through synaptic since I only
associate with one wireless network on this computer.  All of the
configuration settings were retained so I still connect to the network
on boot-up.  There have not been any drops/re-associates since doing
this.  (I realize I wouldn't see any balloon messages, but I don't
notice any connection issues on the network or internet, as well as
/var/log/messages being devoid of reconnect messages)
