I do have the same initial problem. The pause in 7-18 seconds. I tried to disable usb support by appending "nousb" to the kernel line in the grub boot menu by pressing "e". However this doesn't do the trick for me. Can you confirm that. Probably the pause doesn't have anything to do with usb [sdb] at all.
