it would appear as though my shutdown problem was a result of "wake on lan" being enabled in the BIOS. after disabling it, the computer shuts down correctly. i would encourage others that are experiencing this problem to check the settings in the BIOS. it is also probable that the linux driver for the LAN on board this HP dc5100mt motherboard may need updating.
