Adam Szanto the problem with these systray indicators is not a bug but a problem of porting, in my opinion. Both in gnome-shell and Unity, the new Gnome 3 desktops, systray indicators are not used, but app- indicators are. So it is a matter of time that mail-notification gets an app-indicator or a similar application does its function.
But feel free to open a new bug if you consider it a bug.
