Thanks for your quick response. Are you asking about re-adding the Workplace Switcher applet, or the main pair of Panels?
I had tried to re-add the Workplace Switcher applet in regular mode, as described above, but I did not see any results. So I tried again, with zero results. In Safe GNOME mode, I saw both copies of the applet that I had added, plus, I think, the original one, for a total of three copies on the bottom right. It looked weird: three tiny icons for each window in my main workplace, all moving around in unison, instead of just one icon. It looked like a bug until I figured it out, and removed the extra copies. Now, I'm OK in Safe GNOME mode. Changing from Safe GNOME mode to Regular Mode, the Workplace Switcher applet vanished again, and all of the other problems above reappeared, as well. As for the main pair of Panels (top and bottom), how would you re-add them if you lose them (e.g. as happens to me if I use Regular Mode)? Also, when I use Safe GNOME mode, it says that it's running without any start-up scripts. Could these scripts be the source of the problem? Where can I find these scripts? I'd be happy to look at them or attach them here if it would help.
