I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.04, and the shadows appeared as required.
I then installed the patched nautilus (nautilus elementary) from https://launchpad.net/~am-monkeyd/+archive/nautilus-elementary-ppa. After restarting my session, the right-click shadow disappeared. On using ppa-purge on the ppa mentioned above, the right-click dropshadow returned. I guess that it was nautilus elementary that caused the problem.
