I found that disabling Compiz with the command "metacity --replace" and then setting the screensaver to blank greatly alleviated my remote connection problems. The screensaver was causing some problems (probably my bad for choosing Electric Sheep), but I was usually able to restart the vino-server by "ssh -y user@ip" and then running "vino-preferences".
