the other workaround would be to add HorizSync and VertRefresh to the
xorg.conf and use vesa. The original reporter told that running 'sudo
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg' and accepting default values made it
work, has someone else tried that?

Jordi: I'll build debug-versions of the server and driver, so that we
get a proper backtrace for the developer.
