In addition, when I installed the nvidia binary drivers and then ran the command specified by the package description to enable the driver, it put a device line in my xorg.conf specifying an incorrect PCI bus location for my video card, which caused me to not be able to get back into X until I fixed it. There was no backup made (that I could find) of the old xorg.conf so if I didn't know how to use lspci and sudo and vi, this could have been a relatively major problem.
