If you see the messages then the files should be there. Try this: cat /var/log/syslog > ~/Desktop/Syslog
After running that you should have a syslog on your desktop. Dont attach it yet though. Wait for another crash and then after the hard reboot run that command. Desktop edition is great for that laptop. No problem at all. I have desktop edition running on my netbook.
