Have similar issues. ASUS notebook, Aspire 4180T, kernel 2.6.35-24-generic (maverick 64bit), optical drive DVDRAM GU10N by HL-DT-ST (at least that's what the device manager says). The kernel parameter Markus describes doesn't work for me. What does work is simply putting any disc in to the drive and booting while the disc remains in the drive. Haven't tried 32 bit distributions yet.
