I tried linux-
image-2.6.36-999-generic_2.6.36-999.201010151118_amd64.deb.

This does not crash but applying high network load does cause
connectivity to fail. tcpdump shows that ARP requests from my router are
reaching the system, but the replies are not getting through. There is
no dmesg output.

Suspending and resuming the system (by closing the lid and immediately
re-opening it) restores connectivity. Applying high network load causes
it to fail again within a few seconds.

So the upstream situation seems to be: it doesn't crash any more, but it
still doesn't actually work.
