Back to the future... This problem was present on ubuntu 10.04 and could be solved by switching to Kubuntu. Same thing with ubuntu 10.10... I switched to Kubuntu 10.10 64 bit this morning and it works (no problem at all when connecting external screen). I really think it is a problem related with gnome... (see post #23)
