Andrew, the re-installation of your print queue with the "hp" backend absent has simply selected a generic backend from the CUPS package ("socket").This is no problem if you access your printer only for printing and not for scanning (if it is a multi-function device), ink level check, or head cleaning. If you want to use these extra functions you have to re-create your print queue again, so that it uses the "hp" backend.
