I tried this on Ubuntu 7.04 by adding "options snd-intel8x0 ac97_quirk=7" to 
/etc/modprobe.d/options.

It works for me.

Perhaps this option is the workaround that Dennis Kaarsemaker mentioned.
If it is, he stated that it is "quite inappropriate for general use."
Dennis, care to elaborate?

I have also written to the ALSA driver developer to see what he has to
say about it.
