I have a HP dv1240us. It still has the problem with the mute button LED never getting lit. From the information that Dennis Kaarsemaker wrote, it seems that this is "by design," in that ALSA isn't disabling the "external amplifier." If we want to have the LED work correctly, it sounds as though we'd need to have the mute code in the snd_intel8x0 tweaked.
