Ok two more things: (a) strike the comments about garbling: this just happens when I switch to a text console too quickly after gdm starts (so the video is probably still initializing?). It also happens when X is nicely on vt7 and it doesn't happen with X on vt2, but with enough delay before switching to vt1. So, I'm guessing: unrelated
(b) established that when triggering the crash using the Enter key instead of '2' I get the other backtrace that I remembered from back in the beginning of my analyzing this bug (I think start/mid july). I reproduced this twice, and a third time from a perfectly normal vt7 session by manually going to vt1 and forcing isig on (stty -F /dev/tty7 isig): (II) Sep 10 01:11:00 NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "CRT:1280x1024_75+0+0,DFP:2048x1152+1280+0" (II) Power Button: Device reopened after 1 attempts.
