I have the same issue Ubuntu 10.04 with latest kernel and rhythmbox versions (Kernel 2.6.32-25-server x86_64 GNU/Linux and Rhythmbox version Rhythmbox 0.12.8)
When I start Rhythmbox gdm gets restarted and i have to login again. In may case, the device that makes the system "explode" is a Wacom touchpad (input: Wacom Volito as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.2/usb8/8-1/8-1:1.0/input/input25). Disabling MTP plugin makes the trick.
