I think I've found a solution. Building my own kernel and disabling tickless system and setting processor family to pentium-M seems to have cured the crashes.
After setting nomodeset to false I was able to use the laptop without it crashing within an hour or two of waking up from suspend or hibernate. But it would inevitable crash.
