I have this problem with my Dell Dimension (Pentium 4) running the Ubuntu 10.04, but only with some screensavers. The black screen appears when changing the screensaver, but ocurred with other applications, too, specially when using something graphics. I have no troubles with the same UBuntu 10.04 on my laptop Vostro, AMD Sempron. Perhaps could be another bug, or a additional.
