Some more investigations today: if I build consolekit from the latest source and install that, then the error is SYSTEMATIC. Reinstalling the ubuntu package (--reinstall) does not change a thing, the error persists. I also noted that every 2-3 boot the X server will not even start. Is the ubuntu source tree for consolekit available somewhere? After looking at the sources a fix seems trivial but I can't build a .deb that would install cleanly.
