I upgraded from edgy using these instructions:

for i386
At the end of the 'cleaning up' stage i got the same error:
Error during commit
E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
After closing the dialog box the upgrader requests for a restart , then
everything worked fine
Quote:

I didn't have to do that.
