So, I reinstalled ubuntu, and everything is fine now.

To solve the problem with gdesklest, I did two things, installed python3-all 
and followed the  repor tLinux Mint Forums • View topic - gDesklets install ...

This solved my problem, and I hope so help others.

  Parts of my computer's disk lost the partition.
  
  I guess I'll try  to reinstall from a disk.
