I have been using kernel 2.6.34 http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel- ppa/mainline/v2.6.34-lucid/ in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid and using kernel 2.6.33 http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.33/ in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic for a week and both machines are running fine, with full suspend and resume.
I think there are multiple issues causing freezing, but the later kernels certainly resolve the issue affecting these Dell Inspiron 1501 laptops.
