I have tried the 2.6.33.3 and 2.6.34-rc7 mainline kernel packaged at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds and still have the problem... (45% packet loss on ping).
It's been years since I have not compiled a kernel by myself, but I will try it to see if it is better (but I doubt it, as MainLine kernel package should be just that : mainline unpatched kernel compiled and packaged as deb).
