Now that I've had an extra day to mess with this on y 64bit Lucid install, subsequent reboots and multiple trials of going into suspend mode has had no effect on my ability to connect to a WPA connection.
Every-single-time I have tried connecting to a local non-secured wireless station, I have been able to switch back to my WPA router and connect successfully.
